There will be roadworks on one of Ayrshire's busiest roads at the end of the month for almost two weeks.

Maintenance work on the A77 between Sandyford Toll and Whitletts Roundabout will commence on Saturday, November 27 and will finish on Wednesday, December 8, 2021.

Amey are conducting the work on behalf of Transport Scotland. They say they will resurface approximately 2.6 kilometres of the A77 to provide an improved running surface on the southbound carriageway of the stretch between Sandyford Toll Roundabout and Whitletts Roundabout.

This is Phase Two of maintenance at this location. Phase One was completed in October 2021, which resurfaced the northbound carriageway.

The scheme will also include a minor programme of works on the A77 northbound carriageway, and on Whitletts Roundabout.

Below is a list of the clsures and traffic controlling measures that will be put in place during the works.

  • 6am Saturday, November 26 until 6am Monday, November 29  – nearside lane closure on approach to Sandyford Toll Roundabout
  • 8pm Monday, November 29 until 6am Tuesday, November 30 – total closure of A77 northbound carriageway
  • 8pm to 6am each night on Tuesday, November 30, Wednesday, December 1, Thursday, December 2, Friday, December 3 (ending at 6am Saturday, December 4) – overnight total closures of A77 southbound carriageway and lane closures on Whitletts Roundabout
  • 8pm Thursday, December 2until 6am Friday, December 3 – overnight northbound lane closure
  • 6am Saturday, December 4 until 8pm Sunday, December 5 – full weekend contraflow
  • 8pm to 6am each night on Sunday, December 5 and Monday, December 6 (ending at 6am Tuesday, December 7) – overnight total closure of A77 southbound carriageway
  • 8pm Monday, December 6 to 6am Tuesday, December 7 – overnight northbound lane closure
  • 8pm to 6am each night on Tuesday, December 7 and Wednesday, December 8 (ending at 6am Thursday, December 9) – overnight total closure of A77 northbound carriageway

For the weekend contraflow and overnight closure aspects, a pass for residents is available for those living or working within the extents of the closure, covering the properties accessed via the northbound A77 carriageway between Whitletts Roundabout and Sandyford Toll Roundabout.

Those eligible can apply here.

When overnight closures are in place, A77 southbound traffic will be diverted to exit the A77 at Dutch House Roundabout to join the A78 westbound.

At Monktonhead Roundabout, traffic will join the A79 southbound and continue south to Shawfarm Roundabout.

From here, traffic will take the third exit and follow the A79 through Monkton Road, Main Street, Ayr Road and Prestwick road to the junction with the B743 eastbound.

Traffic will join the B743 Heathfield Road eastbound and re-join the A77 southbound at Whitletts Roundabout.

When northbound closures are in place, traffic will follow the same diversion route in reverse.

An Amey spokesperson said: "We thank road users for their patience while this essential maintenance is underway, during peak hours travel times may be longer than usual and road users are advised to allow extra time to complete their journey and use alternative routes where possible."
