A HOST of forgotten, unidentified and potentially valuable historical artifacts from the area’s history are to be the focus of a new council project.

South Ayrshire Council’s museums service has been tasked with putting together a more comprehensive register of assets.

While the museum is responsible for the register of artifacts, it has not had direct involvement in council-owned items that are kept outwith the collection.

This has meant that the council has not had a comprehensive register of all of the historical artifacts in its possession or loaned out.

Laura Kerr told SAC’s Audit and Governance Panel: “We will now be taking responsibility for those artifacts.

Provost Helen Moonie told Ms Kerr: “Given legacy issues you have inherited there has been some really significant progress. I am delighted at the progress that has been made.

“There is just one question and that’s around the recording of artifacts in schools. We did look on, a one off basis, at Ayr Academy  and Marr when they were decanting as both had fairly significant collections.”

Ms Kerr confirmed the museums service would look at the school estate but it added that it was unlikely they would manage artifacts within school collections.
