Ayrshire was treated to a stellar nighttime performance last night as eagle-eyed photographers and residents caught a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

From Portencross to Ayr, swathes of purple, blue and green filled the night sky as the Aurora Borealis became visible from various parts of the county - and thankfully some of our Camera Club members and readers were there to capture it.

According to the Met Office, a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun occurred yesterday [November 3] which gave a higher chance of Aurora Borealis sightings in northern areas.

In North Ayrshire, just two miles west of Seamill, Peter Ribbeck snapped 'the dancing lights at Portencross'. It really is a sight that would take your breath away.

In Girvan, Craig Sommerville snapped the celestial show, and on his phone no less, impressing even himself as he dubbed the results "not bad".

He said: "Taken from golf course at Girvan, was maybe 30 minutes too late to catch the best of it."

When asked by as social media user if he could see the Lights with the naked eye, Craig explained: "You would have at its peak probably about 30min prior to this, and later on about 1am I think as was strong then.

"You would more than likely see the pillars with the eye but black and white, but you'd know something was there, I could just make out pillars slightly but as I said I was late to the party."

Staying in South Ayrshire, Claire Allison managed to spot the Northern Lights from Ayr.

She, too, described them as "dancing around the sky" and was delighted to have had a front row seat to the "stunning show".

Louise Doyle was also lucky enough to spot the Lights in Kirkoswald.
