MP Allan Dorans has told how he ‘endured three days of hell’ after coming down seriously unwell with Covid-19

The 66-year-old SNP politician for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock spent the tail end of last week recovering in Ayr Hospital.

Speaking to the Advertiser from his hospital bed on Thursday night, the MP said: “After three days of hell, the most unwell I have been in my life, racking cough, crushing headache, difficulty breathing, chest pains, sickness, diarrhoea, disorientation and weakness, no sleep or food for three days and nights, being on oxygen for three days, I am now slowly on the mend but still physically weak and have some difficulty in breathing.

“However with the outstanding care and huge cocktails of drugs I have received, the symptoms have gradually been subsiding and I am hoping to be out in the next few days.

“I cannot praise all of the staff of the University Hospital Ayr enough for their care and professionalism which they have displayed not only in my care, but that of all of the thousands of people they have looked after during this pandemic.

“They are a tribute to the health care profession and I am proud of the contribution that the Scottish Health Service make to the health of this country.

“I would also like to remind everyone that this virus has not gone away and to please continue to observe the Government guidelines on face coverings, social distancing, washing hands regularly and other hygiene measures and please keep safe.”

When news broke that Dorans was in hospital, well wishes came pouring in from the political sphere.

SNP leader at Westminster, Ian Blackford, said: “The thoughts and best wishes of everyone in the SNP are with Allan Dorans and his family as he recovers from Covid. Our thanks too are with the excellent NHS Scotland staff who are doing such a brilliant job.”

Labour MSP for South Scotland, Carol Mochan wished Allan a speedy recovery, saying: “Best wishes to Allan. I hope he recovers quickly.”

Others in his own party were keen to send their best. Siobhian Brown, the Ayr MSP wished him well, saying: “I was sorry to hear that Allan Dorans MP is in hospital recovering from Covid-19.

“He is a much respected and hard working colleague and I wish him a very speedy recovery.

“And thank you to our wonderful NHS staff once again for the care and support they are giving Allan and all patients during this pandemic.”
