A vital hospital service in Girvan has been closed to the public due to rising Covid cases in the workforce.

The Minor Injuries Unit at Girvan Community Hospital was forced to close its doors to patients yesterday [Thursday September 24].

This was due to the rising number of staff who are off due to Covid and/or self-isolating because of close contacts.

The NHS decided to close the facility due to 'significant pressures' across the whole health and care system.

The unit caters to non-emergency ailments such as cuts that need stitches, broken bones, sprains, and minor burns.

Those with a minor injury are being asked to contact NHS24 on 111 or contact your GP for advice.

Billy McClean, Head of Community Health and Care Services– South Ayrshire told the Advertiser: "COVID-19, has not gone away and there are still a high number of positive COVID-19 cases within our communities.

"An increase in the number of staff self-isolating or absent due to COVID-19 has resulted in significant pressures across the whole health and care system.

"Due to these pressures, we have taken the decision to close the Minor Injuries Unit at Girvan Community Hospital.

"We will advise as soon as possible when the service is back up and running.

"You can help us keep you and our NHS safe by using our services wisely."
