Prestwick and the surrounding area has lost a hero after it was announced that Billy Herd has died.

Billy was known around the community for his tireless charity work.

He was recently chosen to be Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown's Local Hero.

Billy has been a volunteer and fundraiser since the 1990s. He has been involved with CLIC Malcolm Sargent House and the campaign to save it, as well as The Ayrshire Hospice, Whiteleys Retreat and Ayrshire Cancer Support.

Whiteleys Retreat, a charity that Billy did a lot of fundraising for said on their Facebook: "We are devastated to announce the tragic passing of Billy Herd.

"I hope you will join us in sending love and strength to his nieces, family and close friends".

Our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Billy Herd, who passed away this morning.

"Billy was one of Ayrshire Cancer Support’s longest-serving volunteers, recently having attained a lifetime achievement award for his voluntary service.

"Over the years he made a significant impact to the lives of many thousands of people affected by cancer, as well as helping others through his many charitable interests.
