New South Scotland MSP Sharon Dowey has paid tribute to outgoing Ayr representative John Scott in her maiden speech in the Holyrood debating chamber.

The Scottish Conservative member represented the people of Ayr, Prestwick and Troon for 21 years, having been returned to the Scottish Parliament five times.

In his time at Holyrood, John Scott led the campaign to save the Accident and Emergency unit at Ayr Hospital, convened numerous Holyrood committees and helped hundreds of constituents with casework issues.

Incoming MSP Sharon Dowey was elected to represent the South Scotland region, which encompasses Ayr, Prestwick, and Troon, John Scott’s old constituency.

She used her maiden speech to highlight Mr Scott’s career in the parliament, drawing applause from around the chamber.

Commenting, Sharon Dowey MSP said: “John served in the Scottish Parliament for 21 years, helping thousands of constituents and making a huge difference in his community.

“I would like to thank him personally for all his encouragement, wish him well and hope that he can now enjoy a well-earned rest and spend more time with his wife Sheila and their family.

“I know MSPs from all sides of the political spectrum have a great deal of respect for John, not only for his skill as politician, but as a colleague too.

“It’s a great honour to be elected to represent Ayr, Troon and Prestwick. John may have left big shoes to fill but I’m looking forward to working with the local community and standing up for Ayr’s interests in Holyrood.”

John was the longest-serving Scottish Tory MSP ever.
