Three teenage girls have been arrested after allegedly setting an old church building in Ayr alight.

The blaze, which took hold on Saturday night (May 29) took SEVEN fire service vehicles to extinguish.

The old church building, on the corner of George Street/Lymonds Wynd near the town centre has lain empty for some years and was said to have been in a dilapidated state.

The youngest of the fire-starters was 14-years-old, one was 16 and the other 18.

The trio will appear in court at a later date.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8pm on Saturday, May 29, we received a report of a fire at a building on George Street in Ayr.

“Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. No one was injured in the incident.

“Three teenage girls, aged 18, 16 and 14-years-old have been arrested and charged in connection with the fire. They are due to appear at court at a later date.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 7.54pm on Saturday, May 29 to reports of a building fire on Limonds Wynd, Ayr.

"Operations Control mobilised seven appliances to the scene to extinguish the fire affecting a two-storey building.

"There were no reported casualties.

"Crews left after making the area safe."
