ELDERBANK Primary pupil Oliver Leishman has been busy spending his weekends at Irvine Beach.

But unlike other children who may be at the beach to have fun, this seven-year-old was on a mission of his own – to help clear the litter from the harbourside.

Oliver’s interest in the environment was triggered by a documentary he watched with his family where he learned that litter was causing the deaths of sealife.

So, he decided to do his bit and every weekend Oliver has been down at Irvine Beach picking up litter to make sure it doesn’t fall into the sea.

The dedicated environmentalist also spent a school holiday back at the beach filling more bin bags of rubbish.

Mum Gillian McKean said: “Oliver said he felt very proud of doing the litter picking and wants to continue doing it at the weekends.”

“After watching the documentary he wanted to do his bit to help save the sea life by going down to the beach and he even has his very own litter picker.”
