A FATHER is fearing for his children’s safety following issues with speeding and “huge” potholes on a street in the village of Lugar.

The man, who resides at Park Terrace, has harboured concerns about speeding and gaping potholes in the area since Christmas, but says nothing has been done by the council to abate the problems despite repeated complaints.

The man says it is like “an earthquake taking place inside the property” every time a lorry goes past his front door at around 50mph and with his house within four metres of the road, the vibrations are reportedly causing significant damage to the property, such as pictures falling off walls and damage to the cement pointing on the brickwork of the 100-year-old houses.

Cumnock Chronicle:

The man has also stopped his young children from playing at the front of the property as he believes it is a “death trap” due to the amount of cars whizzing by.

The dad-of-three told the Chronicle: “The holes at the front of the road are getting bigger and bigger. The houses at the front street of Lugar are over 100 years old. It’s a conservation village so we have to keep the house and all the brickwork the way it was 100 years ago but the brick and the render on the building is starting to crack.

“It’s going to cost me an absolute fortune to get someone in to deal with that kind of work. I’m fed up with it. We pay a fortune for council tax as well as for recycling bins but they can’t fill in holes that have been there for months?

“The speeding is absolutely atrocious, too. It’s basically a death trap and it’s going to end in a serious accident.”

Cumnock Chronicle:

The resident now says that with the council “not willing to listen”, he is seriously considering uprooting his family although he fears the road issues could hamper his chance of a sale.

He continued: “The damage could lead to structural problems, that’s what I’m trying to prevent as that could make a big impact trying to sell the house which we’re looking to do because of the speeding issue. It’s a shame because it’s a lovely village but for the kids, from a life-saving point of view, I’m going to have to do something, it’s not safe.

“Is it going to take a death, some poor kid losing their life, for them to come down and fix the problem?”

Kevin Braidwood, Interim Head of Roads: Ayrshire Roads Alliance, said: “I can confirm that Park Terrace, Lugar is on our programme of works for resurfacing. The Ayrshire Roads Alliance is liaising closely with Scottish Water, as they need to replace a water main, which could take in the region of 12weeks to complete, before the resurfacing work can take place.

“Once a date has been confirmed by Scottish Water, the Alliance will then be in a position to notify the local community regarding the timing of the resurfacing works.

“In the meantime, I will ensure that an inspector reviews the area for any current defects and I will discuss with Police the concerns that have been raised about the speed of vehicles within this area.”
