A DEVOTED son’s mission to create a research legacy in his mum’s memory has seen Craig Potter run a staggering 47 10k runs in a row.

And so far, Craig has raised over £14,500 to fund research by Heart Research UK in his mum Theresa’s memory.

He was even spurred on by Radio 2 Breakfast Show host Zoe Ball who heard about the challenge and gave him a shout out.

Sunday, May 9 was Craig’s final run and was a particularly emotional one as it would have been his mum’s birthday made extra special as Craig’s wife Tracey and his children joined him for the final 10k effort.

Craig’s last run was an emotional day for the family.

Speaking just after his run, Craig said: “I’m emotionally drained and don’t have the words to do justice as to how grateful I am to everyone who has supported the challenge from my dad Dougie being there for every step to everyone who took the time to run or walk and of course, all the people who have donated, thank you.

“And to Craig McEwan who also ran 10k every day, that is a true testament to our friendship.”

Craig revealed he was on a mission to raise awareness of the shocking statistic that 47 people a day are dying in Scotland due to cardiovascular disease.

Last year, Craig’s mum Theresa, a woman devoted to the community of Kilwinning through her youth work, passed away suddenly.

The aim of the challenge is to raise money to fund two research funds in her memory, one of the research studies will look at the way women are affected by heart disease and the second research fund will look at statistics that show you are three times more likely to suffer a heart attack in Scotland than you are in London.

Since he started his 47 runs back in March, Craig has had the support of his dad Dougie, family and friends, every step of the way.

Former footballer Craig has had the chance to catch up with some old team mates along the way.

He even went to Hibernian Football Club, where his cousin John is the assistant head coach, for one of the runs.

And pupils at Kilwinning Academy where his mum Theresa had set up a counselling service also turned up to support Craig.

“This would be a million times harder if I didn’t have the support of the people who have reached out to run alongside me,” said Craig.

“It’s been a chance to catch up with some old teammates and friends I haven’t seen for a while and that has helped as I feel sore a lot and it takes a while in the mornings for my legs to wake up but we had to keep going.”
