Fire crews were called to Ayr Hospital this morning after the main boiler failed which caused flooding in the building and meant there was no heating supply.

Three fire appliances, plus special resources, were called out shortly after 7am, with the incident causing disruption to both outpatient and surgery activity.

However, NHS Ayrshire and Arran confirmed that heating and water supply had since been restored.

Joanne Edwards, director of acute services, said: “NHS Ayrshire and Arran is dealing with an ongoing incident at University Hospital Ayr concerning the failure of the main boiler. This has caused a water ingress, which has had an impact on patient lifts.

"We welcome the support of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to resolve the issue.

“Heating and water supply had been affected for a very short while. However, this has now been restored.

“Unfortunately, the incident has had an impact on patient activity in outpatients and surgery, and we apologise to the small number of patients who have been affected."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted shortly after 7am on Thursday, January 14, to reports of flooding within Ayr Hospital.

"Three fire appliances, plus special resources, were mobilised to the scene at Dalmellington Road."
