A MUM has been left furious by a company’s offer of a £5 voucher after her eight-month-old son nearly choked on a sharp piece of metal found inside baby food.
Jade-Marie Connell, 22, says her “heart collapsed” when she saw her baby boy Kian began to gag and she saw the shiny object in his mouth.
The mum from Girvan had bought Cow and Gate Potato and Turkey roast from Savers.
But when she started to feed him she began to panic, as the sharp object around the size of a £1 coin cut the tot’s mouth.
Jade-Marie told the Advertiser: “I noticed he was gagging and thought that wasn’t normal as he’s never like that with food, he gagged a second time and I noticed something shiny in his mouth, I got it out and that’s what it was.
“His cheek was cut, it was jaggy edged, I decided to check his mouth which was bleeding probably because he’d been trying to swallow the piece of mental. My heart collapsed - I’d hate to think what could have happened it would have cut all his throat.”
Jade-Marie says the piece of metal was like a sharp edge of a can of juice and was shocked that it had gotten into a sealed jar of baby food.
Now she has vowed to never buy the baby food again, branding their response to her concerns a “joke” after she called them on Monday, October 12 after the ordeal.
She said: “I phoned Cow and Gate and they were really unhelpful, it was a 10 minute call of them basically making it out that that it could have been from the shop.
“The jar was intact and sealed, if it was opened I wouldn’t have given it to my son. They want me to send them the lid of the jar and the piece of metal found so they can send it to their lab . I was not satisfied at all. My son could have ended up seriously injured or worse.
“Luckily I’m vigilant with him especially while eating.”
Just days later, Jade-Marie was contacted by Cow and Gate with a letter which had a £5 voucher attached to it.
She added: “I received this in the mail which I personally think is a joke considering the state of my son’s mouth.”
Food company Danone, who manufacture Cow and Gate, have issued an apology and say they are investigating.
A spokesperson said: “We’re sorry to hear about Jade-Marie’s experience.
“We’ve asked Ms Connell to return the jar to us, in special packaging we have provided, so that we can fully investigate.
“We have checked our records which show that all of our quality controls were operating correctly.
“We believe this to be an isolated incident and is unlikely to have occurred at our factory. We’re committed to finding out what has happened, and we’ll keep in touch with Ms Connell as we investigate.”
