CORONAVIRUS has been confirmed at a second Ayr supermarket with staff testing positive.

Tesco Extra on Whitletts Road has been hit with COVID-19.

The supermarket giant say a small number of staff have contracted the virus.

It comes just days after it was confirmed that a contact tracing operation was underway along the road at Asda in Heathfield.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “A small number of colleagues at our Ayr Extra store have tested positive for COVID-19.

"The safety of our colleagues, customers and suppliers remains our number one priority and we are following all government guidance and taking the relevant precautions.

"We have extensive measures across all of our stores to help keep everyone safe, including protective screens at every checkout, social distancing signage and regular cleaning.”

Lynne McNiven, Director of Public Health at NHS Ayrshire and Arran said: "NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s Health Protection Team is completing contact tracing associated with a retailer in South Ayrshire.

"Close contacts identified through this process are being advised to self-isolate for 14 days by the Test and Protect Team. The risk to the public is low.

"To respect and maintain patient confidentiality it is not possible to release any further information at this time.

"The symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19): new persistent cough; high temperature; and / or loss of taste and smell. Anyone who develops any of these symptoms should book a test and self-isolate immediately."
