The MSP for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley Jeane Freeman has demanded an urgent meeting with TSB officials following the announcement that the Cumnock branch has been marked for closure.

Earlier this week, on Wednesday, September 30, TSB announced 73 branch closures across Scotland.

TSB’s Cumnock branch is earmarked for closure in June 2021, while the Girvan branch in the town’s Dalrymple Street is scheduled to close its doors in February.

This leaves both towns with one remaining bank.

Alongside Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP Allan Dorans, Jeane Freeman has now requested urgent discussions with TSB bosses to discuss the impact of the decision on their local communities.

Ms Freeman said: “Most businesses have been hit hard by coronavirus – banks are no exception.

“But at a time when many are feeling isolated, face-to-face banking services in the local community are indispensable for my constituents.

“Girvan has been hit particularly badly by high profile companies pulling out of the town in recent years including RBS and this latest decision by TSB will leave the town with only one banking provider.

“Alongside my colleague, I will fight to keep these branches open."

Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP Allan Dorans commented: "This is deeply concerning news, which will come as a shock to many of my constituents who have already lost other banks from their town centres.

“Closing local bank branches amidst a global pandemic, when people need financial advice and support more than ever, is not just an inconvenience. Every one of these branches is hugely important to the community it serves.

“I have requested an urgent meeting with the Chief Executive of TSB regarding the future of services in Cumnock and Girvan.”
