DISAPPOINTMENT the Welsh Government has not brought in measures to support locked down Conwy’s economy has been expressed by the Leader of the County Council.

The Welsh Government announced on Tuesday Conwy and Denbighshire will go into lockdown on Thursday at 6pm. Local lockdowns will also be imposed in Wrexham and Flintshire.

Cllr Sam Rowlands anticipated the local tourism sector would be potentially affected.

He said: “It is understandable that the measures have been brought into place with the recent rise in cases.

“It could have an impact on some sectors of the economy, especially tourism. It is disappointing the Welsh Government has not taken measures to support this and other sectors at this time.

“I want to thank the residents in Conwy for all their efforts in keeping this virus at as low a level as possible.”

Health Minister Vaughan Gething made the announcement to the Senedd.

He said the decision followed a meeting he and First Minister Mark Drakeford had with local authorities and police.

Mr Gething said: “Unfortunately, we have seen a rise in coronavirus cases in four north Wales local authority areas: Denbighshire, Flintshire, Wrexham and Conwy.

“These are largely linked to people socialising indoors and are the pattern of transmission similar to what we have seen in South Wales.

“We have worked closely with local authority leaders and the police in North Wales and we all agree about the need to take swift action to control the spread of the virus.”

Under the rules, nobody is able to enter or leave the counties without a "reasonable excuse".

Exceptions include travelling to school or to work if you are unable to work from home.

People can travel to buy food and medical supplies, seek medical assistance or go to the vets, and move home.

Gwynedd and Anglesey will not be included in the lockdowns at this stage.

Mr Gething said there were no plans for no more restrictions on a national level.

The Welsh Government has stated in its updated guidance the local lockdown will be in place for as long as needed to ensure the virus has been brought back under control.
