Two drivers were fined for careless driving and one person taken to hospital after a double crash in North Ayrshire.

At around 8.10pm last night, emergency services rushed to the A737 Bypass Road at Beith after reports of two separate incidents on the road.

Police, ambulance and fire service personnel arrived at the scene described by one eye-witness as a 'massive crash'.

Each of the crashes involved two cars and brought traffic on the road to a halt, with Transport Scotland advising travellers to find an alternative route.

The A737 at the Beith Bypass was closed for hours in both directions due to the accidents.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police were called around 8.10pm on Saturday, 19 September, 2020, following the report of two separate road crashes on the Beith Bypass road, Beith.

"Each incident involved two cars and one person was taken to hospital as a precaution.

"One driver from each crash was issued with a fixed penalty for careless driving."
