AN EXCITING opportunity has arisen for West Rhyl residents of all ages, to become Community Champions and support community safety and improve the appearance of their environment.

The Rhyl Safer Streets Project, an initiative led by North Wales Police and partnered by Denbighshire County Council, aims to encourage residents to maintain and look after their own communities.

Cllr Mark Young, Lead Member for Planning, Public Protection and Safer Communities, said: “We are looking to recruit community champions who will assist in providing a positive impact in West Rhyl. It is hoped that groups made up of local champions can help drive real change such as reducing anti-social behaviour and environmental crime, including fly-tipping, graffiti and littering, and create an improved sense of community safety, ownership and engagement.”

Activities included in the champion role are for residents to have a say and become involved in practical conservation; to work alongside the Council’s Countryside Services in ‘greening up’ the town centre; to become a point of contact for other residents and empower others to take pride in their community and raise any issues, along with sharing positive good news stories.

Funding is available to provide any required training for champions and also to purchase any equipment needed to carry out the role.

An introductory ‘virtual’ workshop for interested residents is planned for early October to provide more information on the project.
