TODAY marks national burger day a celebration of one of the most popular food choices available on menus across Ayrshire.

We can't wait to tuck into one later and have complied together a list of the best spots on our doorstep.

From classic beef burgers done right to mammoth creations we've picked out five places to enjoy a bite.

The Irvine spot serves up some pretty spectacular burger creations.

You can go for the towering Skyscraper option which comes with three patties, bacon mozzarella and crispy onions.

Or a more Scottish route with the Highland Fling with a black pudding fritter smothered with hot buffalo sauce and cheese.

The Fox and Willow

Ayr Advertiser:

This Ayr restaurant has long been a popular place to visit for a family meal or a cosy date night.

Specialising in great fresh produce, with staple favourites done right, the Fox and Willow also cooks up a cracking burger.

A firm favourite amongst customers seems to be their mouth-watering crispy Southern fried chicken burger.

Top Dexter Café

Ayr Advertiser:

This Muirkirk café boasts a fine menu of classic American style burgers which have proved hugely popular in East Ayrshire.

You can be sure to go Stateside with each burger named after a famous place in the US, go for a hot one with the Texas which comes with hot chilli sauce and jalapenos.

Or enjoy a beef patty drizzled in mustard with their New York burger.

Nosh

Ayr Advertiser:

Another spot where wacky creations are the norm is Nosh in Barrmill.

If you are struggling to choose between a chicken or beef burger you can go for two in one here.

One of their offerings includes fried chicken on top of two beef patties oozing with chilli cheese and parmesan.

The Red Lion

Ayr Advertiser:

This Prestwick pub has been serving up good honest grub for years.

You can’t go wrong with a classic Scotch beef burger and a pint which is exactly what is on offer here.

Situated right at the start of the strip of bars and restaurants it’s a great place to stop off for a munch before heading off to explore the town.
