THE devastated family of a former Ayr nightclub bouncer has told how he was the ‘king of dad jokes’ after he died from cancer just five weeks after being diagnosed.

Les Ogrady passed away from complications due to colon cancer at Ayr Hopsital on June, 30 aged 46.

He had been diagnosed with terminal cancer after doctors discovered a tumour that had been growing for years.

Treatment began straight away but the chemotherapy led to a kidney infection which led to sepsis.

Tributes have been led by his heartbroken stepdaughter Kelly McCrindle who was part of her life for 15 years.

Les was due to marry her mum Margaret McColm, 49, in October and the family expected the ceremony to go ahead.

Ayr Advertiser:

She told the Advertiser: “I called him my stepdad - we were very close. Him and my 12-year-old daughter Rebecca had the best bond I’ve ever seen in my life.

“We are a close knit family.

“We were just devastated and just so shocked for it to go this quickly. We thought we would get 18 months, we only got five weeks.”

She added: “Les was a bouncer at Club De Mar and Madison’s years ago.

“He was well known throughout the town as he was a recruitment manager who gave a lot of people jobs.”

Les had lost his sight over the last few years as a result of type 2 diabetes, Margaret suffers from fibromyalgia, but the couple supported each other throughout.

Kelly said: “They both looked after each other.

“Les was stand offish about leaving the house because he lost his sight, he had anxiety attacks about going out and things.

“Planning on getting married in October had been together for 15 years.

“My mum was able to go and say goodbye to him. He was taken in late on Sunday evening and died the early hours of Tuesday morning.”

The family said their final goodbyes as Les was cremated on Friday, July 10, half of his ashes were then taking to Liverpool to be with his parents.

Kelly has thanked his extended family and those in the community who knew him who helped with funeral costs.

She said: “Because he died so suddenly, you have to pay for the costs up front, they both weren’t working.

“I set up a fundraiser and we are so grateful to everyone who helped.

“It was a lovely ceremony, we had around 30 at the crematorium. His funeral song was another one bites the dust, that sums Les up– he was the king of dad jokes.”
