A NEW Cumnock minister says she hopes churches continue to increase their online presence but has warned of growing “digital inequality”.

It comes as churches were given the go-ahead to reopen for the first time since March as lockdown restrictions continue to be eased but numbers inside are limited to 50 and must be socially distanced with singing restricted.

Despite the announcement from the Scottish Government, several churches, have decided to remain closed, including New Cumnock Parish Church.

Reverend Helen Cuthbert made the decision in part due to her church’s strong online presence which has streamed services during lockdown and was already doing so prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said: “It’s been difficult for people especially as time has gone on.

“We were already online prior to lockdown which was a bonus and we were streaming services on Facebook and YouTube and we had created DVDs for housebound members so there was already that digital presence.

“When we went into lockdown that meant all our services went online.

“We also found a company that could do a phone line for people who are not on the internet.

“The feedback has been very positive and we have had people who don’t usually come on a Sunday join in online which is great to see.

“Of course there are disadvantages such as the lack of fellowship and face to face - there is no substitute for that.

“We are still closed as we feel it is not the time to reopen yet.

“I think digital will be here to stay but some people cannot afford Wi-Fi. We have to support people who are not on the internet and not leave them behind. We don’t want to create digital inequality.”
