The pupils from St John’s Primary participated in ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ workshops held at Ayr United Football Club in 2016.

Former professional footballer Gary McSwegan, who played for Rangers, Dundee United, Hearts, Kilmarnock, Ross County and Inverness Caledonian Thistle, was capped by Scotland twice. He works for Show Racism the Red Card and led a workshop for the young people along with campaign manager Nicola Hay.

The workshops focused defining racism and educating the young people on the causes and consequences of it and explored the forms that it can take.

They also looked at what immigration is and the various reasons that people move from one country to another, exploring myths about asylum seekers and refugees.

Afterwards the pupils said: “I learned what immigration is, what a refugee is and not to judge a book by its cover.”

“I have learned not to say stuff that can offend people.

“Don’t judge people by the colour of their skin, racism is against the law.”
