Dementia Friendly Prestwick have launched a community knitting project – and everyone can give it a go.

While we can’t always be together, we can create something beautiful together.

As individuals, you can knit or crochet squares (try for 8 inches), and as lockdown begins to ease, every square will be stitched together to make one big piece of art.

You can add details that are significant to you, a loved ones name, buttons or something that tells your story during this difficult time.

Once members are able to gather together again, the finished piece will go on public display, thanks to South Ayrshire Galleries and Museums.

Dementia Friendly Prestwick have also gifted some knitting packs to The Biggart hospital and local schools are being encouraged to join in too.

This week is Dementia Awareness Week, and it’s never been a more important time to think about the needs of others in the community, and how we can have a positive impact, one stitch at a time. Photographed are Libby and Rowen Climie.

Scotland is in lockdown. Shops are closing and newspaper sales are falling fast. We're not exaggerating when we say that the future of the Ayr Advertiser, and the vital local news service we've provided since 1803, is under threat.

Please consider supporting the Ayr Advertiser in whatever way you can – by paying just 90p for a copy of the paper, when you're shopping for essential supplies for yourself and others, or by subscribing to our e-edition here.

Thanks – and stay safe.
