TWO Ayrshire MSPs are backing calls for local authorities to reopen recycling centres.

It comes as concerns are raised about an increase in fly tipping as a result of centres being closed due to lockdown measures.

Green MSP Ross Greer and Scottish Conservative MSP Brian Whittle now want the Scottish Government to support councils in safely reopening centres in a bid to prevent fly tipping.

Mr Greer said: “There’s been a huge increase in fly tipping across the country in recent weeks and reopening these centres should help to reduce this problem. Larger items like furniture and electrical goods can’t be recycled through council bin collections, so it’s important that people are patient.

“There will likely be a huge rush to these centres as lockdown is eased and it’s vital that this is managed safely.”

Mr Whittle said: “Fly tipping isn’t just against the law, it can damage the environment, harm wildlife, attract vermin and be a hazard to the public and council staff who have to clear it.

“Despite the hard work of council staff, it’s increasingly clear that household waste collection alone isn’t enough.”
