CUMNOCK’S Yipworld has welcomed plans to give councils £10 million to introduce ‘pop-up’ measures to provide greater space for cyclists and pedestrians during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The charity, which helps youths stay active, wants to see investment in the roads.

Yipworld Chief Executive Janice Hendry told the Chronicle: “If we get this in Cumnock and not just city centres, this would be a blessing.

“It would certainly help us without cycling initiative which is on hold at the moment.

“Being a cyclist myself I am appalled at the state of the roads.

“One has to focus on the road ahead at all times to avoid some of the pot holes and damage at the kerb areas.”

Councillor William Crawford said he believes there are no cycle lanes in Cumnock and insisted that ‘any being introduced would be of benefit’ to the area.

An East Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “In response to the Scottish Government’s offer, we are currently looking at measures to encourage safer walking and cycling during the lockdown.”

Ms Hendry said it would be helpful to have dedicated cycle lanes especially for taking children and families out on led cycles so they have a safe space to be able to cycle with confidence.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport Michael Matheson announced the funds last week to help ensure people can walk, cycle and wheel during this public health emergency whilst physically distancing and keeping safe from traffic.

He said: “Our communities need this support quickly, especially with the welcome increases in cycling we are seeing across the country.”
