A PRIMARY school in Ayr is seeking to bring the sun to locked-down students this spring by delivering sunflowers to their door.

Newton Primary is seeking donations of sunflowers from the public to send to their students alongside food parcels they have been delivering to families in need.

Since schools closed their doors on March 20, the staff at Newton Primary have gone above and beyond to ensure families are safe and happy.

They said that lot of families are suddenly finding themselves struggling financially due to job losses or wage drops, so the staff have organised food parcels, lunches, dinners, fuel help and are now launching an appeal for sunflowers to try bring a little cheer to our families.

Headteacher at Newton Primary, Fiona McAvoy said: “Many of our families live in flats with no gardens and we thought we could try to brighten up their day by providing sunflowers.

“We have been doing food parcels for families from school every day so we thought we could give them out when the families collect their parcel. Others will go out with lunch boxes.”

A spokesperson for Newton Primary said: “We would love to bring a little bit of the outside in and spread a bit of joy to our children and families, so we are looking for donations of sunflowers in pots.

“If you are able to help please drop off any plants at the school. Thank you for your continuing support. If you know anyone that could possibly help please send them our way. Thank you.”

Over the last four weeks, the school has provided over 400 free food parcels for families, over 1100 free lunches and have helped families struggling with their energy bills too.
