South Ayrshire carers should be tested for Covid-19, the council’s depute leader has said.

Councillor Brian McGinley called for hundreds of carers looking after those most at risk of coronavirus in the area to be tested.

The local Labour leader wants all health and social care staff to undergo tests and said the Scottish Government should accelerate the roll-out of them to more people.

He said: “We need to know who has it and who hasn’t.

“There are people self isolating and they don’t need to be. I call for testing for carers and the patients they are looking after."

The Ayr East politician pointed out people left alone in self isolation can take a sudden dip.

He said: “People are dying because they don’t have access to medical attention.

“Knowledge is key. People are making judgements based on assumptions.”

People in care homes are at high risk with the virus spreading rapidly within them.

South Ayrshire councillor McGinley pointed out intensive testing in Germany and South Korea has helped reduce the impact of the pandemic and wants rapid result tests rolled out.

He also said Holyrood should provide more guidance on key worker status and force non essential businesses to stop trading.

He said: “Some employees have to work because their bosses don’t want to lose the profit.”

He explained they aren’t classed as key workers so don’t have any childcare.

He also expressed concern about lack of protective equipment available to health and social care workers but said it is now improving.

Commenting on South Ayrshire Council’s response to the pandemic he said: “Please be assured that the council is doing everything possible locally to keep essential services running, helping to shield the vulnerable and keeping communities safe.

“It is a difficult and fast moving situation but with your help, patience and understanding then we will cIome through this crisis.”

He added: “I wish to express my thoughts of solidarity with the loved ones of the individuals who have died, and with those who have contracted the virus.

“I want also to thank all the people who are following the official advice to stay at home unless on essential duties or taking daily exercise.”
