Four residents and a member of staff at a care home in Beith have tested positive for coronavirus.

Health officials were called to Spiers Care Home, at Janefield Place, late last week.

Having displayed COVID-19 symptoms Public Health Scotland was called in over the weekend to test the residents while the staff member attented a hospital for testing.

A statement from May Prentice, head of operations for Silverline Care which owns the facility, said: "We are sorry to confirm that it has now been confirmed that four residents at the home have tested positive for Covid-19. In addition, one member of staff has tested positive for the virus.

"The staff member was tested at a hospital and has not returned to the care home since receiving their diagnosis."

Ms Prentice said the four residents are being provided treatment in isolation and all other residents are being encouraged to isolate within their bedrooms.

She said the care provider is working closely with North Ayrshire Council and NHS Ayrshire and Arran to follow best practice guidance for the safety of all residents and staff.

She said: "We have notified residents, their families and all members of staff about the situation and our commitment to protect residents and staff.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank staff within the home for their commitment to the residents at this difficult time.

"We thank you for your support and understanding and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us."
