A COMMUNITY centre has delivered emergency food parcels for residents in desperate need.

Netherthird Community Centre set itself up as a resilience centre with East Ayrshire Council to tackle the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Staff at the centre were aided by members of Netherthird Community Council who came to the centre to put in a shift, maintaining social distancing.

The team bagged up fresh meals that can be used, as well as emergency parcels with essential foods such as pasta and rice.

The operation has been co-ordinated by chairperson of the Community Centre, Maggie Campbell.

She told the Chronicle: “Every Thursday we are doing a delivery service of emergency food parcels. It’s for families that are struggling, they maybe have no income right now, or it is for people who are self-isolating as they have symptoms or older people who can’t leave the house just now.”

Maggie, who also works are a home carer was devastated when the Centre at the very heart of Netherthird had to close.

But she has hailed the response from kind residents who have assembled to help those in desperate need.

Maggie said: “It’s been fantastic how this wee community has all pulled together. The Community Council have been great, every member has helped with this.”

“As soon as this started, we put our name down to be a resilience centre, and we’ve got great volunteers. East Ayrshire Council have just been incredible through this too. We have to thank them for their amazing support.”

The meals have been made available for residents who are in critical need of support. Those who are really struggling have been urged to contact Netherthird Community Centre.

Maggie added: “We will do whatever we can to help.”
