Two bursts on the local water network are being tackled by Scottish Water in Ayr.

The first occurred on a 15 inch trunk main outside Ayr Railway Station, causing flooding on the track, and was followed by another burst further along the pipe, early this morning.

The supply problems affected the KA8 and KA9 areas.

Craig McDonald, water operations team leader, said: “We have been working as quickly and efficiently as possible following these bursts to minimise any inconvenience and disruption to customers and properties at this challenging time for us all.

“We have been following the guidance of ensuring that our workers stay the correct distance apart while progressing with our repairs.

"We were pleased that we were able to retain normal supplies to a significant number of properties and are working to ensure that the impact on the supermarket is minimised and it can function as normally as possible until we complete the repairs and normal supplies are restored.”

A tanker is also in operation at a nearby supermarket so that it can continue to function as normally as possible for customers and staff.

Train services have not been affected by the bursts. Water from the bursts had flooded part of a nearby railway track but this has now subsided.

Repairs are now under way, with two teams of Scottish Water operatives on site using large diggers to access and complete repairs to the bursts on the water main.

Road traffic management is in place and road users are urged to follow local diversions. Castlehill Road is closed at Lochlea Drive to enable repairs. Northbound diversion is via Chalmers Road and southbound diversion is via Belmont Avenue. Four-way lights are in operation and local access is being maintained. Station Road has been reduced to one lane.

A spokesperson for Scottish Water said: "We appreciate these closures will cause some inconvenience to road users and thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

"Our staff are key workers who are doing all they can to look after the water network for our customers."
