A former bank could be transformed into a restaurant in Prestwick if proposals are given the go ahead.

Firm Sava Estates has applied for permission to turn the 1890s historic building at 2 Main Street at the Cross into an eatery.

Plans for the former Bank of Scotland property include a large bar or servery and kitchen at the rear with access to the garden.  The name of any possible restaurant has not been revealed in planning documents lodged with South Ayrshire Council.

Prestwick Tory councillor Hugh Hunter said: “If it is a high quality restaurant I would not have an objection to it.  “But a McDonald’s or a Burger King would not excite me. The building has been empty for a while. Prestwick is the number one town in Scotland.

"A big part of that is the quality of the cafes and restaurants we have.”

Plans say the venue would open from 10am until 11pm on Sunday to Thursday and on Friday and Saturday until midnight.  A planning statement submitted by agent Bennett Developments and Consulting  said the bid is for a “quality restaurant.”

The statement said: “The proposed development will see this attractive, well situated property converted into a quality restaurant with its own parking at the rear.

“Not only will the proposed new restaurant see the re-use of this vacant property but it will  introduce a new dining experience into Prestwick and complement those which already exist.

“The location set within this attractive landscaped setting will also offer opportunities to sit outside and enjoy a refreshments in this oasis within the town.”

No decision has been made yet on the application.
