PRESTWICK Main Street has been crownd Scottish Champion High Street in a UK wide competition. 

The main social hub for shops, restaraunts and bars has won £5,000 which will go towards the local community. 

The Great British High Street Awards saw Prestwick pitted up against 39 other shortlisted towns. 

The awards form part of a initiative for Visa to encourage more people to shop local. 

Judges were impressed by the 'strong synergy' between businessness and the local community in Prestwick. 

They highlighted the rising sucess music festival Prestfest and the Christmas lights switch on remains a great successs each year. 

Jeni Mundy, Managing Director, UK & Ireland, Visa said: "Prestwick is a fantastic example of a community that has made huge strides in transforming its high street to significantly improve the experience for locals and visitors alike.

"In particular, its entry highlighted the strong synergy between businesses and the local community through a number of events that encourage everyone to come together. For example, Prestfest is a free event in the summer where the town is filled with live music and the Christmas lights switch on remains a great success each year.

“Visa’s research reveals four in five Scottish shoppers (82%) say that a thriving high street makes a town or village a more appealing destination, underlining why we all need to get behind our local businesses.”
