A DEVOTED mum is saving baby kangaroos and koala bears who are burning in the Australia fires.

Deborah Hannah was horrified by images and footage of the animals suffering in the tragic fires and with her son over there too, she knew she had to do something.

It comes after millions of animals lost their lives in the devastating fires leaving thousands injured and in desperate need of help.

The 50-year-old from Muirkirk is now knitting the animals to safety by making as many blankets, pouches, and other items to help protect the wildlife.

Along with Jill Mccan she is hoping to drum up more support to get wool donations and more knitters in the area to pitch in.

Cumnock Chronicle:

Deborah was left distraught after not being able to get in contact with her son Brad Wayne Hannah, 27, for days as the fires roared on in Sydney.

He had moved over there four years ago and now lives in Perth.

Now the helpful mum is determined to save as many lives as possible, and is hoping Cumnock and Doon Valley will help her.

She said:“My sons over in Australia, we stay in Muirkirk and we have family in Cumnock. “He went over four years ago for Sydney he went with just a backpack and lived in Sydney but then moved to Perth a year ago.

Cumnock Chronicle:

“We have got people in the UK Crafters For Australia Animal Rescue Effort helping us out but we need more help from people in Cumnock and Doon Valley.

“Jill McCann forwarded information onto me which got me involved, we decided together to help and get more people on board.

“I was motivated because my son is over there and I couldn’t get in contact with him for a few days and I knew I had to help.

Cumnock Chronicle:

“Millions of animals are dead and hundreds of thousands are injured, koala bear’s are burning their hands and feet because their instincts are to grab trees which are very hot right now.

“We have been making blankets and pouches and things for the animals.

“The group only started four days ago looking for more people to sign up that be amazing if he would get some people in Cumnock and Doon valley to sign up “We are in dire need of blankets it takes ages to knit one of them if we could get people to knit one of them it would be great.”
