MORE than £8,000 was raised for deserving local groups from the Muirhead Co-op in Troon.

A special celebration day was held to award their three local causes with cheques - an overall total of £8597.37.

The money is raised by customers and colleagues who are Co-op members – one per cent of what they spend on Co-op-branded food products is given to the local causes in the community that they have chosen.

Organisers were delighted with the support which has been received.

This year the local causes were: 28th Ayrshire (Troon) Scout Group who received a total of £2,706.05 which they are using to give their young people access to good quality bikes to encourage them to be more active.

Canine Partners for Independence, £3,185.91, wanted to raise funds to train an assistant dog to transform the life of his or her disabled partner. Troon Community Sports Hub received a total of £2,705.41and they want to provide a wheeled sports facility for the community to benefit cyclists, skateboarders and others.
