AYRSHIRE College recently held celebration events at its three main campuses for care-experienced young people within Ayrshire.

The events took place during National Care Leavers Week 2019 and involved external agencies and support organisations coming to the college’s campuses to hear about the work done to support care -experienced students. Young people currently in the care system had an opportunity to take part in a variety of curriculum activities, set up to give them a flavour of the courses available to them from January 2020. A number of care experienced young people shared their personal experiences and there was a presentation of certificates to celebrate their achievements. Participants also met the Ayrshire College Student Association, Campus Police Liaison Officer and Drug and Alcohol Liaison Officer, the Equality and Inclusion Advisor, the Sport and Fitness Team, Learning Technologists, and Hair and Beauty students to learn what they do within the College to help students.

Jean Cullen, Team Manager at Throughcare North Ayrshire, said “These events gave us a chance to celebrate the achievements of care experienced people within the community, and to show them what opportunities might be out there.”

Carol Turnbull, Ayrshire College Principal said “Ayrshire College was delighted to host these events. We heard inspirational and moving stories from some of the young people. It was a credit to all the partners involved and I’m sure everyone left feeling uplifted.”
