MAJOR glory has been celebrated by a Troon teen golfer in Europe’s biggest amateur event.

Dean McCusker, a member of Troon St Meddan’s enjoyed a clean sweep win at Trump Turnberry in the Titleist Order of Merit single event and the team event for Scotland.

With an entry of over 23,000 competitors, Dean managed to get through to the final, played at the celebrated venue, which has played host to four Open Championships, the last of which was 10 years ago. Tom Watson, winner in 1977, was edged out by American compatriot Stewart Cink in a playoff that year.

The beautiful setting and weather made for a closely contested competition with the Troon teen shining through as the winner despite some strong opposition from other very talented players.

Julie Lees of Westhill Golf Club was the ladies winner in another competitive event.

Scotland also won as a team in what was a great weekend of golf featuring the cream of competitors from across the continent.

The event was played on the Ailsa course during the October school week after a practice round the day before on the Robert the Bruce course.

Dean (18) is originally from Glasgow and this is his biggest achievement in golf so far.

He has been playing golf for a couple of years and is seen as a good prospect.

The Troon youngster is a starter at Troon Links and also helps out behind the scenes in Gold South Ayrshire events.

His mum Yvonne said: “I’m really proud of Dean.

“He played very well throughout the weekend in a top competition.”
