A West Kilbride man has been selected as the new Labour candidate for North Ayrshire and Arran in the upcoming General Election.

Stirling University graduate, Cameron Gilmore, has been tasked with winning back the seat from Patricia Gibson, who won it from Katy Clark in 2015.

Cameron, who studied Politics and Journalism at Stirling, has been an active campaigner for Better than Zero and Labour for a Green New Deal.

He said: “It’s a real honour to be selected to run in what will be the most important election in decades and I’m just so proud to be representing my home constituency.

“As your Member of Parliament, I will bring a transformative agenda to the streets of North Ayrshire and Arran, a constituency sorely neglected by both the SNP and Conservative parties. Here we have rates of unemployment of over 20 per cent, well in excess of the Scottish and UK average.

“I don’t consider myself to be a political ideologue, when I promote my campaign as the Labour candidate I do so as a member of the working class, as someone who has experienced exploitation from the market. As someone who has been extorted by privatised public services. As someone who has first-hand experience of zero hours contracts and all the stress and anxiety that goes with it.

“I’m very much looking forward to getting on the campaign trail, meeting as many of you as possible and hearing whatever issues or concerns you may have and most of all fighting for Labour values.”
