A CONCERNED resident wants to see more police on the streets of Prestwick after a spate of serious crimes.

Tricia Young is also campaigning for better CCTV coverage of the town’s blind spots where trouble often brews.

Tricia, who runs an online page to spread good news in the town, is worried by recent incidents including last weeks alleged sexual assault on a woman.

She told the Advertiser: “That (alleged sexual assault) was the last straw, this is really concerning.

“There’s been so many people who have been jumped on in the Main Street. There’s a lot of things people don’t hear about, boys who went to local schools are fighting each other every weekend or fighting over girls.

“I want to start a campaign to get more CCTV cameras in Prestwick. It’s appalling really how much goes unnoticed.”

Tricia, who was herself a victim of violence on the Main Street when a group of girls attacked pals last year, believes Prestwick’s popularity could be its downfall if nothing is done to tackle the anti-social behaviour spilling out of bars onto the street.

She added: “We are victims of our own success in a way. People are coming from all over to come to Prestwick because it’s a great night out.

“So we need more police on our streets. It needs to change because it is only going to get busier, there’s new places opening all the time.”

Area commander for South Ayrshire Police Chief Inspector Brian Anderson is aware of concerns but insists the town is “well served” with five CCTV cameras and officers. He told the Advertiser: “I’ve got no issue at all with the coverage of CCTV cameras in Prestwick. The main thoroughfare of the town is well covered.

“We are well aware of the attractiveness of Prestwick given the choice and variety of licensed premises. I understand the concern of residents and visitors of the town considering what happened last weekend but Prestwick remains a safe place to come and visit and the residents’ visitors can expect to see police officers in the town.”
