TWO new electric cars, which will improve transport for the most vulnerable Ayr residents, were unveiled last week.

South Ayrshire Community Transport announced the two year pilot scheme which will give the local community access to two low-carbon electric vehicles following a £60,000 pledge of funding from SP Energy Networks.

The new vehicles are set to aid those who need additional support to help them with vital transport to medical appointments, job interviews or even just shopping.

And they will add to the fleet of minibuses which are utilised by local voluntary groups and organisations to carry out activities.

It comes after South Ayrshire Community Transport received the funding grant last year from SP Energy Networks as part of their £20 million Green Economy which supports the ambitious green targets of the Scottish Government to meet climate change targets quicker.

The vehicles were launched at Rozelle Park with Provost of South Ayrshire Council, Helen Moonie, community transport manager for South Ayrshire Community Transport, Catriona Hatson and Angus Campbell, General Manager for Ayrshire and Clyde South of SP Energy Networks.

Catriona was thrilled that SCT are now able to expand their services thanks to the new vehicles.

She said: “We are extremely proud to be launching the new electric vehicle Community Car Club for local residents.

“Our current transport services have been popular and it’s great that we’re now able to expand this to be able to meet the demand. “

Cllr Moonie thanked SP Energy Networks for their funding.

She said: “Thanks to funding from SP Energy Network’s Green Economy Fund, South Ayrshire Community Transport has been able to set up a Community Car Club using two low carbon vehicles.

“This is a positive step to combat social isolation and link communities across South Ayrshire.”
