A VOLUNTEER group is looking for workers of all skill sets to ‘give a day’ of their time to help projects in need.

Give A Day Ayrshire has been utilising generous teams or kind individuals who have picked up paint brushes rolled their sleeves up and helped numerous local projects for two years.

Last month GADA had their most successful week yet arranging three projects including over 30 volunteers who helped Whiteleys Retreat get a new complex for families and children ready.

The concept was started by Peter O’Brien in 2017 who took inspiration from the Carlisle GAD which was first formed in the wake up the devastating floods which hit Cumbria in 2014.

Peter who works as a doctor in an intensive care unit gives every Friday away from his job helping people to arrange helpers in the local community.

And he was left motivated by the amazing work carried in Carlisle to help re-generate the area.

Peter told the Ayr Advertiser: “Give A Day has a simple ethos and that is to give your hand away for the day for the benefit of someone else. That is how Give A Day was born.

“I rolled it out to Ayrshire two years ago now, our very first project was to help out the social enterprise Unity Grill in Ayr.

“We have been starting off really small and just try and encourage that Ethos in Ayr and Ayrshire.”

Now Give A Day are looking to set up a bank of skilled volunteers who are ready when the right project comes along.

And its not just large projects for charities that Give A Day is going to support.

Last year they redecorated the flat of a victim of domestic abuse who they got in contact through Women’s Aid.

Peter is open to suggestions via the website and social media pages for any projects or anyone who could do with the extra hands.

He added: “We are trying to create a platform on social media, whereby anyone who has any project that they want to do.

“We are just co-ordinator, the motivation and the passion for change can actually come from anyone on the street.

“One of the things that is resounding for me, is the standard you accept is the one you want, even a simple bit of litter on the beach, Give A Day will support you with your passion and enthusiasm to get up and running with volunteers”
