POLICE are using drone technology to crackdown on bad beach front behaviour in South Ayrshire.

Officers at Troon beach joined forces with the Air Support Unit with one of Police Scotland’s new RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) devices.

The device is fitted with a camera system similar to the police helicopter and enabled officers on the ground to monitor the movement of people on the beach and enhance the deployment of resources.

Ayrshire Police Division say with good weather forecast for the coming weeks they will be clamping down on alcohol and anti-social behaviour throughout the summer.

The move is part of the force’s annual Safer Shores initiative which is promoting wholesome fun in the sun and cops hope the drone technology will deter people from talking part in antisocial behaviour - or catch those who do.

Chief Inspector Brian Anderson, Area Commander at South Ayrshire, said “The RPAS was used for the first time at Troon Beach today and provided additional information to support our Safer Shores operation.

“The good weather brought lots of visitors to the beach and the use of the RPAS was an excellent additional tool to ensure the safety and enjoyment of everyone visiting. The RPAS was used together with the deployment of officers on foot patrol.”

“Many members of the public showed interest in the device which is quite a sight when landing and taking off. The officers from the Air Support Unit were more than happy to engage with the public about the device and I would like to thank them for attending today.”

The device will be used for future operations at Troon Beach and elsewhere in South Ayrshire.

Police have beefed up their presence on Ayrshire beaches with additional officers from Police Scotland and British Transport Police in and around Ayrshire’s coastal areas, on trains and at railway and bus stations working with other partners to keep people safe.

Superintendent Colin Martin, of Ayrshire Police Division, said: “The annual Safer Shores initiative has been developed to ensure a swift response in tackling incidents of antisocial behaviour at our coastal locations.

“Our message is clear - Ayrshire has some fantastic beaches and people are welcome to enjoy everything they offer, this must be done responsibly though.

“We will have officers on patrol across Ayrshire to ensure visitors enjoy their visit to the beach - remember it is an offence to consume alcohol in public places and all incidents of antisocial behaviour will be dealt with robustly.

“Police and partners will be promoting safety messages online using #AyrshireSaferShores and I would encourage anyone with any concerns to speak with officers on patrol or to call us on 101.”
