CUMNOCK Academy enjoyed a fun day with local police officers while learning about road safety.

The event highlighted the importance of staying safe whilst using a motor vehicle as a driver, learner driver or passenger.

Presentations were given from Police Scotland New Driver Scheme, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Angela McShane from the Reinvention project who shared her personal story of being a victim of a hit and run collision.

The pupils then followed interactive workshops including CPR, Safety Camera Partnership with virtual reality headsets.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service shared their experiences of attending road collisions, while Police Scotland drink driving workshop using beer goggles and breathalysers.

British Transport Police brought a rail safety van showing videos of near miss collisions, particularly at level crossings.

PC Baillie, Cumnock Academy Campus Police Officer, said: “Pupils who attended this event thought it was a fantastic day and enjoyed all the workshops and presentations, they have learned valuable lessons about how to keep safe on the roads.

“The event has been a great success sharing important road safety information to the young people of Cumnock Academy.

“In the last year there have been 146 fatalities on Scotland’s roads.

“25 of these fatalities were within the highest risk group of 17 - 25-year-old drivers. 240 senior pupils within this age group attended the event and have benefited from this experience.”
