A man carried out a horrific sex attack on a one year-old girl – then blamed the child's innocent mother.

Alan Kusz struck at the tiny victim's family home in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire in April last year.

Jurors heard the incident described as being “as bad as you can get”.

The 43 year-old – who was often in the company of the child and her mum – denied the crime.

Sick Kusz instead claimed he had left the pair alone one evening at the house to walk his dog.

He insisted on his return the girl was “screaming” before she later ended up in hospital.

But, Kusz is now behind bars after he was today convicted of sexually assaulting the child to her permanent impairment.

He will learn his fate when he is sentenced later this month.

The High Court in Glasgow heard how the “world came crashing down” for the child's mum after her daughter was left badly injured.

The attack occurred on the morning of April 9 last year.

The mum had planned that day for the girl to be looked after by her childminder before discovering the horror.

In her speech to jurors, prosecutor Lisa Gillespie said: “There was her obvious upset when she described what she saw.”

The youngster ended up needing surgery. A paediatrician said the injury was the “most severe” he had seen.

Kusz was later held by police. DNA helped link him to where the attack happened.

But, during the trial, Kusz protested his innocence.

Miss Gillespie told jurors: “He said he had gone to walk the dog and, when he returned, the child was screaming.

“The suggestion seems to be that on the Sunday night, the child mum's injured and then callously left her to her fate.

“That is the logic to what Alan Kusz is saying.”

But, the advocate depute said it was instead apparent the girl was “loved, wanted and well cared for” by her mum.

The court heard the child had recovered from surgery, but that it was “difficult” to definitely say what the future holds for her.

Lord Armstrong remanded Kusz in custody and deferred sentencing for reports.
