A DRIVER left the scene after their vehicle struck a two-year-old child in Prestwick.
The incident took place on Prestwick Main Street on Saturday, May 11 around 3.40pm.
The child was taken to Ayr Hospital to be treated for minor injuries and was later discharged.
Police have confirmed that the child had a lucky escape due to the speed of traffic at the time of the collision.
Traffic cops later traced the driver of a Ford Fiesta who has been reported for road traffic offences.
A spokesman for South Ayrshire Police Division said: “An incident occurred at approximately 3.40pm on Saturday, May 11 whereby a young child aged two was struck by a vehicle after running onto the A79 Main Street, Prestwick.
“Fortunately due to the speed of traffic passing the location at the time, the child only suffered minor injuries and was allowed home following treatment at Ayr Hospital.
“The driver of the Ford Fiesta involved left the scene of the collision but was later traced by Road Policing Officers and reported for road traffic offences relating to the matter."
