AYR could have a new shopping centre outlet as a company are in talks to build in the town’s collapsing retail market.

The Scottish Design Exchange (SDX) is looking at expanding Ayr’s town centre through recently vacated premises.

They are a social enterprise who provide high street space to artists and craftspeople in busy shopping arcades.

The company are looking at expanding Ayr the shopping profile in a way which could help revitalise the council’s long-term plan of regenerating the area.

Lynzi Leroy, the chief executive of SDX, believes her business model can help to revive flagging town-centres which have been negatively affected by changing shopping habits and the recent collapse of several high street chains.

Last week Ms Leroy met with Chic Brodie, Director of CEDA, to discuss the possibility of opening of an Ayr outlet. Mr Brodie, a former Chairman of the cross-party group on social enterprises at the Scottish Parliament, described the discussions as “constructive and fruitful.”

He said: “We will have the first of meetings this week with those representing larger Ayr high street properties, recently vacated, to explore how Lynzi’s not-for-profit business might expand into Ayr.”

Ms Leroy, who has international business experience, said: “We have shown this enterprise model can provide income to hundreds of small, independent producers and provide a great experience to shoppers. I believe it can and will help the wider retail industry.

“Given the right facilities in Ayr, we see an opportunity to develop along with the town’s other possibilities around visitor and tourist activity.”

Ms Leroy, who is looking also to expand elsewhere in Scotland, added: “I feel we haven’t yet seen the full impact of this business model which has a long way to run.”

The SDX provides high-footfall retail space for artists and craftspeople as well as providers of traditional skills and doesn’t charge commission on items sold. Tenants pay a fixed fee to rent selling space, so they’re not penalised for the popularity of their products.
