BARASSIE residents are concerned that tourists want the height restrictions removed from the beach car park.

A tourist who regularly visits Troon has raised concerns that barriers could be forcing visitors away, meaning that only small cars can park in the bays.

Holidaymakers with larger vehicles to park are forced to park on the street. But one resident, who does not want to be named, got in touch to explain why the height restriction is needed.

Our source said: “I have lived here for 37 years and we did not have an issue until about four or five years ago.

“One Friday evening a group of travellers arrived and set up camp at the car park on Barassie Beach. Police tried to remove them but they refused to leave.

“They eventually left but dumped all their rubbish and did not clean up after themselves. I can accept people want to come here on holiday but this was not an isolated incident as they nothing would be done.

“The council had to help us to get a height restriction put in.

“There is an open car park area nearby. People don’t realise what the consequences are for people living here.

“They say this is driving away tourists but there is nothing here apart from the beach. Visitors would have to go into Troon anyway.

“We had to do something about this ongoing problem. Cllr Peter Convery helped fight our cause and it has been much better since the height restrictions were put in place.

“There is an area just 100 yards up the road with portable toilets and I would urge tourists to visit that area.”
