A £2MILLION project to modernise the main sub station in Troon is about to begin near Marr College.

The new installation that supplies Troon and the surrounding areas will see approximately 4.5km of both high voltage and fibre optic cabling.

Work at the sub station, which supplies 10,000 homes, will take nine months to complete, but it has been confirmed that no work will be outside the sub station's boundary.

Elaine Forsyth, the stake holder manager for Scottish Power and SP Energy, said: “The work will take place completely in the sub station boundary of the existing sub station that we have and there will be no traffic.

“The one area we are concerned for is that there is a lane at the sub station which leads down into Marr College, so we have taken precautions and the contractor is very mindful of the fact Marr College is there.”

All the work that is carried out will taken place between 8am and 4.30pm with any deliveries taking place out with school hours. There will be no deliveries between 8am and 9am, lunch times or school closing time.

Ms Forsyth added: “We do not expect there to be a lot of traffic to be going in and out and we do not expect there to be an increase in traffic but there will be deliveries.

“If everything goes to plan, we do not expect any supply interruptions during this modernising of the sub station and we won’t be touching any trees or any of the surrounding plantations or vegetation.”

Previously speaking to Scottish Power when the planning for the sub station was announced, Graham Campbell, Ayrshire District Manager at SP Energy Networks, said: “These works will not only further improve the security of supply in the area but provide a modern and reliable infrastructure to support future development on the electricity network to accommodate growth in and around the town.

“It’s our job to keep the power flowing and the lights on, and upgrade works are a big part of ensuring that happens. We would like to thank the local residents and stakeholders for their support and patience.”
