AN AYR family were offered just £175 after a faulty tumble dryer went on fire within their home.

Their home and possessions were destroyed in the flames which was due to the malfunctioning domestic appliance from the company, Whirlpool.

The incident, which happened in the constituency of MP Corri Wilson, is now demanding for government action to recall all faulty tumble dryers in the country as Whirlpool claim that an estimated 5.5 million may contain faults to cause a fire.

Ms Wilson commented that the family being offered just £175 in compensation was ‘an absolute disgrace’ and urged the government to ensure that affected people are adequately compensated.

Social media sites are full with complaints about the company and how they are dealing with the problem.

Michael McCaffery, said: “Mine went on fire and it took me six months to get a someone to fix it — but I still don’t trust it at all.

“I cleaned it out after every use to make sure there was no lint build up but when it was taken apart it was coated with grime all over the machinery.

“It filled the engineer’s vacuum cleaner.

“I am still not happy there was a fire in my house due to a known fault, and I wasn’t offered as much as a sorry.”

A petition calling for action from the government has been signed by more than 100,000 people.

The Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP took part in a Parliamentary debate on Tuesday, April 25 where highlighted the fire risk posed by faulty tumble dryers owned by Whirlpool.

Speaking during the debate, Ms Wilson said: “If Whirlpool themselves have recognised that their machines pose a fire hazard – why are they still in homes up and down the country?

“The number one job of a government is to protect the population and yet, despite repeated calls for action, this government continues to sit on its hands offering small snippets of advice to Whirlpool while millions of homes across the UK hold potentially life-threatening appliances.

“I therefore urge the Minister to take immediate action in agreeing to a full recall of all affected appliances.

“It is the government’s duty, and it is the right thing to do.”
