MUSICAL marvel Scott Nicol from Prestwick has become a charity champion for his commitment to Hansel.

He was named the Symington-based charity’s first ever Community Superhero in recognition of his work with young people.

A talented singer himself, he supports young people by giving up his time to provide free songwriting courses as well as regularly staging fundraising concerts.

His efforts impressed the judges to enable him to see off some strong competition and win £100 of vouchers for local boutique Hi Street and a hamper from Sainsbury’s.

Scott carries out his charity work despite having a busy schedule running his music business Possibility Screams, performing with band The Limitless Sky, giving solo acoustic performances and songwriting.

Managing director of Hansel,Gerry Lindsay, said: “We were so impressed by the quality of entries for the award – it was heart warming to hear about so many people who are giving up their time to help other people across Ayrshire.

“We all have gifts that our communities would or do find of great benefit, and it is to Scott’s credit that he freely gives so much of his time to enhance the wellbeing of, and opportunities for, people he engages with locally.”

Claire Smith from Hansel supporter Sainsbury’s, Blanche Nicholson MBE from Hansel and Val Russell, Chief Executive of Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce were on the judging panel.

The awards ceremony kicked off a weekend of celebrations to mark Hansel Day which culminated with the Mud Run on Saturday, April 30th.

Volunteers also staged a fundraising bag packing and busking event at Sainsbury’s in Prestwick, who have chosen Hansel as their adopted charity for this year.

Debbie Campbell, who nominated Scott, said: “Nothing is too much trouble for Scott, he has helped people of all ages build their confidence through music. The joy he brings to people through his music and likeable personality make him a worthy winner.”
