Thomas Cook has been slammed by one family man after he claims they did nothing to get him out of Tunisia after the terrorist attack on Friday.

Richard Merry, was on an 11-day holiday to the country with his wife, and three children who are all under the age of 13.

Mr Merry said: "It was pretty scary, we were on the beach at the same time as it was going on.

"My wife got a Sky News alert and after we figured out what was going on, we hurried back into the hotel.

"We spoke to a Thomas Cook representative and got our name down first on the list to get out of Tunisia as soon as possible.

"But Thomas Cook didn't get us home any earlier. We heard they put on one extra flight on the Saturday, but we couldn't get on it, we had to wait until our scheduled flight at 10.40am on Sunday morning."

The family were staying in the nearby resort of Skanes, in the Sahara Beach Hotel, just a short distance from Sousse - the scene of the shooting.

Whilst Mr Merry was unhappy with Thomas Cook, he couldn't praise travel agent, Barrhead Travel, highly enough.

He said: "Barrhead Travel were brilliant, they called us three times while we were away to make sure we were okay. There wasn't anything they could do for us, but it was great they checked in."

Mr Merry said that the hotel did not clear the beach after the massacre and that there was no armed presence during the final two days of their holiday.

He said: "I accept that anything can happen, anywhere and at any time and my heart goes out to the people who were killed."

A Thomas Cook representative said: "The health and safety of our customers is our absolute priority.

"Thomas Cook can confirm that we have brought back around 1,500 guests, who wanted to leave Tunisia earlier than scheduled on four repatriation flights.

"One flight left on Monday June 29 and three over the weekend of Saturday June 27 and Sunday June 28. Including those who have returned to the UK on our regular scheduled, flights, around 4,000 Thomas Cook UK guests have left Tunisia since the attack on Friday June 26 .

"We are committed to doing everything we can to support our customers who want to depart, and will continue to closely monitor the situation. If there is further demand we will provide additional capacity to ensure all customers who would like to come back to the UK can do so safely and as soon as possible.

"Thomas Cook would like to extend its most sincere condolences to the family and friends of those affected.

"In light of the events in Tunisia on Friday June 26, Thomas Cook is offering customers due to travel to Tunisia up to and including July 12 the opportunity to cancel or amend their holiday free of charge.

"For those travelling from July 13 onwards, we are offering to amend their bookings to Tunisia free of charge for holidays departing up to and including October 31 2015. We have added capacity in four other popular summer holiday destinations including Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria, and Turkey to respond to increased demand."
